Goalkeeper: Alphonse Areola (Paris Saint-Germain)
PSG needed a win against Ludogorets after failing to see off Arsenal in their group opener, but they might not have achieved it if Areola had not come good. The goalkeeper, picked ahead of Kevin Trapp, made a superb second half save from Cosmin Moti's penalty with PSG leading 2-1 and Edinson Cavani then scored his second goal of the game to put the result beyond doubt. PSG are up and running and Areola, who has spent the last three seasons out on loan, was the main man to thank in Bulgaria.
Right-back: Luis Hernandez (Leicester City)
Islam Slimani may have stolen the headlines with yet another goal against Porto but Hernandez's performance at right-back for the Foxes demonstrated their extra squad depth this season. The ex-Sporting Gijon man came in for Danny Simpson and performed well in a backline that came under increasing pressure as the match went on, holding firm as the visitors pressed. It was efficient, unspectacular and exactly what the home side required.
Centre-back: Gerard Pique (Barcelona)
Pique has often demonstrated a striker's instinct in front of goal and he bundled the ball home from close range in the 74th minute after Yann Sommer had fumbled to give Barcelona three points at Borussia Monchengladbach. They maintained their 100 percent record with a performance nothing like the 7-0 thrashing of Celtic, but proved that even when the likes of Luis Suarez and Neymar are subdued, they have match-winners elsewhere in the side.
Centre-back: Kamil Glik (Monaco)
Monaco were dire for the majority of their home game against Bayer Leverkusen, and it took a bolt from the blue to maintain their unbeaten start in Group E. The Polish defender cracked a stunning 94th minute half-volley high into the net in the fourth minute of stoppage time, manufacturing an equaliser Monaco had never really threatened and ensuring that Javier Hernandez's sixth goal of the campaign did not see the visitors walk away with all three points.
Left-back: Kieran Tierney (Celtic)
Celtic set into Manchester City at a rattling tempo and played fearlessly throughout Wednesday's thrilling 3-3 draw. Tierney's performance spoke volumes. He was never afraid to charge forward and showed it when, with the score 1-1, he received a Thomas Rogic pass on the edge of the area. His cross-shot was diverted into City's own net by Raheem Sterling. Early in the second half, another Tierney delivery was converted by Moussa Dembele for Celtic's third and the tone set by the marauding left-back proved fundamental to a memorable Champions League night.
Central midfield: Gabi (Atletico Madrid)
It was another snarling, battling performance from Atletico against Bayern Munich and the 1-0 scoreline mirrored that of the semifinal first leg in last year's competition. While Yannick Carrasco scored a superb winner, captain and central midfield dynamo Gabi was his usual indefatigable self and helped stem Bayern's flow in a match that saw the visitors hold 63 percent of possession but create few clear chances. Gabi and Atletico are a machine that shows no sign of easing up.
Central midfield: Thomas Delaney (FC Copenhagen)
Delaney earns his place in this week's team after scoring a goal that will be difficult to better in this season's competition. The midfielder thudded the sweetest of 30-yard strikes past Club Brugge goalkeeper Ludovic Butelle, connecting perfectly with his left foot as the ball sat up, and it complemented a fine all-round performance in a 4-0 win. Delaney, who will join Werder Bremen in January, scores once every 10 games on average, and this one was worth waiting for.
Left midfield: David Silva (Manchester City)
City creaked at times against Celtic but Silva was magnificent, pulling the strings in midfield and helping Pep Guardiola's side work their way back into the game three times. It was Silva's wonderfully weighted pass that allowed Sterling to finish brilliantly to level the scores at 2-2, and another cute ball after half time released Sergio Aguero to fire in the shot from which Nolito ultimately equalised. Silva has been irrepressible this season and here, in a City side slightly subdued in the absence of Kevin De Bruyne, his contribution was timely indeed.
Right midfield: Theo Walcott (Arsenal)
Has the penny finally dropped for Walcott? If you listen to the Arsenal forward it has, and a match-winning performance against Basel certainly showed his best side. The determination that saw him run into the box to connect with Alexis Sanchez's cross for the first goal certainly augurs well while his second -- an accurate finish after a give-and-go with Sanchez -- was perfectly taken. Walcott and Arsenal have had plenty of false dawns before, but both can cautiously say they are getting into some kind of groove.
Centre-forward: Moussa Dembele (Celtic)
Neither of Dembele's goals against City were especially pretty. He knew little about the first, for which he may have been a shade offside, while the second was not the cleanest of contacts despite the initiative shown in greeting Tierney's cross with an overhead kick. But these were crucial interventions from a striker who has a knack of being in the right place and, at just 20, already has 12 goals this season. Dembele scored important strikes in the qualifying round wins over Astana and Hapoel Beer Sheva and looks well suited to the biggest stage.
Centre forward: Dimitri Poloz (FC Rostov)
Poloz is little-known outside Russia but made a splash on the continental stage when scoring Rostov's first-ever Champions League group stage goals. His brace against PSV Eindhoven also earned the surprise package their first point in the competition. Both goals were well-taken but the second, drilling in a first-time effort from 20 yards after reacting quickest to a knockdown, caught the eye in particular. It might be a stretch to imagine Rostov passing through Group D but they will certainly put up a fight.
