Borussia Dortmund have appointed former captain Sebastian Kehl as their new head of the licensed player division, effective June 1.
Having played for Dortmund from 2002 until his retirement in 2015, Kehl is a three-time Bundesliga champion and won a domestic double winner in 2012.
Three years later, Kehl, 38, is now set to return to Borussia Dortmund in the newly created position of head of licensed player division, the Bundesliga club announced on Monday.
"By bringing Sebastian into the fold, we have completed the sporting direction headed by [sporting director] Michael Zorc," CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said in a statement.
"The new tasks with which he is charged are of the utmost importance for our further sporting development."
By appointing Kehl, Dortmund are hoping to bridge the gap between the club offices near the Westfalenstadion and their training facilities in Brackel, one of the city's eastern suburbs.
"Sebastian brings a high level of specialist knowledge and competence with him and is a figure with whom everyone can identify," Zorc said.
After retiring from football and travelling the world as a backpacker, Kehl completed a qualification in management at UEFA and also his UEFA A coaching licence.
"I am looking forward to the challenge, the opportunity to participate in the shaping of this club's sporting future and to [share the] responsibility for that," Kehl said.
