LOS ANGELES -- Just when then Los Angeles Dodgers were beginning to get healthier, they suffered a few more setbacks on Sunday.
Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, returned to the team for the first time since his injury but suffered a setback in his recovery and is not expected to be back by Friday.
"At this point I think we've hit a little bit of a snag because he felt a little something today still," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "The reason he came back was to let Doc check him out, get him on the field and try to extend him as far as he could and see where he's at. He's not quite there. Does that mean it's two days, three days or seven days? I don't know that answer, but we do know that he's not 100 percent. When we get that then we'll think about him going out and playing."
Kemp, who has been rehabbing the past 10 days at Camelback Ranch, the Dodgers' spring training home in Arizona, felt some discomfort while running around the field and returned to the clubhouse.
"He's not quite there," Mattingly said. "I don't think he's going to be ready on Friday."
The Dodgers also will be without shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who had an MRI on the same sore left hamstring that forced him to miss 28 games. The exam came just five days after Ramirez was activated from the DL.
"He's having continued problems, enough where they want to get another look at this thing," Mattingly said. "We'll find out if it's going to be more serious than we talked about. We'll find out if this ends up being something more long term."
Ramirez has been held out of the lineup for four straight days but has pinch hit in each of the last three games.
"He had stiffness," Mattingly said. "Guys want to play, but if they can't run it's hard to play. This game is hard enough at full speed, and if you can't go full speed it's hard."
Andre Ethier fouled a ball off his right ankle and limped to the Dodgers clubhouse on Saturday, but Mattingly said that was not why he was left out of the lineup on Sunday.
"He's a little sore in his foot, but he's fine," Mattingly said. "He's just getting a day. I hope to have him as a pinch hitter."
The Dodgers also placed pitcher Ted Lilly on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 5 with a neck sprain and recalled pitcher Matt Magill from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Magill started Sunday for the Dodgers. This is Lilly's third DL stint of the season. The 37-year-old missed the first 19 games of the season while recovering from left shoulder surgery and was also out for 17 games from April 30 to May 20 with a right rib-cage strain.
"I'm assuming it's going to be a two-week thing because he was trying to make the start (Sunday)," Mattingly said when asked about the timeline for Lilly's return. "The neck was just at a point where he couldn't go. Does the neck (pain) go away tomorrow or the next day and everything goes well? I'd assume he'd be ready to pitch again within 15 days."
