Padres put Tyson Ross on disabled list

DENVER -- The San Diego Padres have put opening day pitcher Tyson Ross on the 15-day disabled list because of inflammation in his right shoulder.

The Padres announced the move Saturday, retroactive to Tuesday.

"They've got my best interest at heart," Ross told reporters. "I know with our training staff, I'll be out on the field soon enough. ... I'm confident that they're going to get me out there, get me right and probably even better than ever."

Right-handed reliever Brad Hand, claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins earlier this week, reported to the Padres to fill the roster spot.

Ross took the loss on opening day against the Dodgers, giving up seven earned runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Manager Andy Green described Saturday's move as precautionary.

"We're very optimistic with Tyson," he said. "I think it's precautionary by nature. The possibility existed where he could try to push through it, but it just doesn't make sense right now. Let's just try to take care of him, make sure he's ready to go as quickly as possible. It's putting his health at the top."

Righty James Shields, moving up a spot in the rotation but pitching on his normal rest, will start Sunday's series finale against the Rockies. He'll be followed by Andrew Cashner on Monday at Philadelphia.

Lefty Robbie Erlin, who picked up the win Friday against Colorado with 3 2/3 innings of one-hit relief, will move from the bullpen to make a spot start Tuesday.

"That's part of the reason he came out the game (Friday)," Green said. "He's got enough time to recover and make his next start."
