Royals place catcher Gallagher (oblique) on IL

The Kansas City Royals placed catcher Cam Gallagher on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain and called up Nick Dini from Triple-A Omaha, the team announced Thursday.

Gallagher, who took over as the Royals' primary catcher after the team traded Martin Maldonado to the Chicago Cubs last month, sat out Kansas City's last three games and last played Sunday.

He was a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup because of tightness in his left side.

Meibrys Viloria has been starting in Gallagher's place, but Dini will get the start behind the plate Thursday night in Detroit for his major league debut. He will be the eighth homegrown Royal to debut in the big leagues this season.
