Jets' 53-man roster projection shows shortage of targets for Sam Darnold

The New York Jets open training camp for the 2020 NFL season on Tuesday at their Atlantic Health Training Center in Florham Park, New Jersey. The Jets finished 7-9, third place in the AFC East, wrapping up the ninth straight season out of the playoffs. With continuity under coach Adam Gase and coordinators Gregg Williams (defense), Dowell Loggains (offense) and Brant Boyer (special teams), the Jets return 16 starters, most of whom are on defense -- the strength of the team. Here's a 53-man roster projection:

QUARTERBACK (3): Sam Darnold, Joe Flacco, James Morgan

The Jets might need to perform roster gymnastics for the first couple of weeks of the season because Flacco (neck) might not be ready. In that case, they can utilize the new practice squad rules, which allow teams more flexibility when it comes to promoting or demoting players. This means the Jets can call up David Fales to give them an experienced No. 2 on game day if Flacco isn't cleared for Week 1. The rookie Morgan will be on clipboard duty for 2020.
