Dontari Poe has opportunity to pocket $125K by meeting weight clause

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Dontari Poe had his fourth weigh-in day and his fourth opportunity to earn a $125,000 bonus -- on Wednesday.

Poe's contract was structured with a weight incentive -- when he weighed in at 330 pounds or less on four specific dates, Poe would pick up an additional $125,000 bonus. He earned the initial incentive when he weighed in at 340 pounds or less for the first day of a mandatory minicamp in June.

The other weigh-ins requiring him to weigh 330 or less were the first day of training camp and the Wednesday before Week 3.

Citing a source, ESPN had reported earlier Wednesday that Poe made the weight to earn another $125,000 in incentives, but it is not known whether Poe did, in fact, meet the incentive Wednesday.

The weigh-in clause was a part of Poe's three-year, $27 million deal signed during the offseason. The weight bonuses count in full on the salary cap as likely-to-be-earned incentives.

This is similar to the clause Poe had in his deal with the Atlanta Falcons last year. Poe reportedly earned $125,000 in incentives at one point prior to training camp for weighing in at under 330 pounds.

The clauses became necessary when the two-time Pro Bowl selection reached the 350-pound range at times during his first five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs after being selected in the first round out of Memphis. He also had back issues during his time with the Chiefs.

The Panthers officially list Poe on their roster at 6-foot-3 and 346 pounds.
