Manly rally late to beat Newcastle in NRL

The fresh legs of Karl Lawton have given Manly the try to subdue a courageous Newcastle 30-6 in drenching conditions at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Lawton came off the bench and with the game in the balance just 11 minutes from fulltime, the Knights goal-line defenders never suspected the second-rower would barge over from dummy-half under the posts.

Follow-up Manly tries to Haumole Olakau'atu and Taniela Paseka - Lawton giving the final pass - and the game was over.

It gives coach Des Hasler and his men their third NRL win in a row.

And they compiled the five tries-to-one victory without fullback and Dally M player of the year Tom Trbojevic (knee).

But the Knights, playing just their second home game in five rounds, had some rotten luck with two tries disallowed and injuries aplenty.

On a wet and windy night in Newcastle, Daly Cherry-Evans picked up from where he left off on a dry track at Mudgee.

After booting 21 kicks (651 metres) in the Sea Eagles win over the Raiders last week, he had 22 for 681 metres on Thursday night, showing his kicking game defies the weather.

He set up Morgan Harper's try with a perfectly weighted corner kick.

Combine that with Dylan Walker putting Andrew Davey through a small gap near the line and the visitors had a healthy 10-0 lead at the break considering the weather.

To be fair, Jake Clifford and Kalyn Ponga weren't too shabby either in appalling conditions with 11 for 423 metres.

At halftime the Knights were licking their wounds in more ways than one.

They had scored no points in three halves of football, when the 18-0 loss to the Sharks was factored in.

And the dressing sheds resembled a hospital emergency department.

Winger Dominic Young limped from the field in the 19th minute with a right knee injury and didn't return.

Then Ponga was off for a concussion assessment after hitting his head hard on the turf.

And finally prop Jirah Momisea was clutching his left arm as a trainer helped him off in the 33rd minute.

That left one Knights player on the bench as lock Kurt Mann moved to wing and then fullback to try to cover for all the casualties.

In the second half, things brightened a little.

Ponga was back after his HIA and scored for the Knights after nice lead-up work from left centre Bradman Best and wingman Enari Tuala in his 50th NRL game.

Cherry-Evans also made a rare mistake in sending one of his kicks out on the full.

The Knights pounced but Chris Randall knocked on while trying to ground a Ponga kick.

Meanwhile, in back play halfback Adam Clune was having his left knee strapped but he soldiered on.
