Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon will move its 2020 event to a virtual format, race organisers announced in a statement on Monday.

The IRONMAN Group, the race's organiser, launched a virtual series and running club as an alternative to the annual run held throughout Singapore. Organisers are touting the new event as "a unique alternative race format with virtual and possible physical components that are being explored."

Standard Chartered Bank, which has sponsored the race since 2002, also announced that it would extend its deal through 2023.

Races around the world have been suspended or canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the running industry has scrambled to stay afloat.
