Great Britain's heptathlon medal hopeful Katarina Johnson-Thompson has withdrawn from the competition after suffering an injury to her right calf in her 200 metre heat.

Johnson-Thompson was in fifth position overall heading into the 200m, however, she pulled up in the first 100m and fell onto the track in obvious pain.

"Unfortunately @JohnsonThompson has withdrawn from the #Tokyo2020 heptathlon due a calf injury sustained during the 200m. Get well soon, Kat," the official Team Great Britain account wrote on Twitter.

The 28-year-old refused a wheelchair to help her off the track and instead got up and continued to the finish line but was in obvious discomfort.

It was announced after the race that she had been disqualified for leaving her lane.

A ruptured achilles had nearly ended her hopes of competing at her third Olympics, but she had managed to recover in time for the Tokyo Games.

The 200m event marked the last part of the heptathlon for Wednesday with the long jump, javelin and 800m race due to go ahead on Thursday.
