Paralympics: Sarah Storey to compete at historic ninth games

PARIS -- Great Britain's most successful Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey will compete at her ninth Games this summer after being named in the country's 23-rider cycling squad on Monday.

Storey, 46, has a record 17 gold medals from her previous eight Paralympic Games -- her first coming as a swimmer at Barcelona 1992, where she won two golds, three silvers and a bronze.

She switched to track and road cycling in Beijing 2008, adding a further 12 gold medals.

For the first time since 2008, Storey will not race on the track having only entered in the time trial and road race events.

"I'm thrilled to have the chance to put on the ParalympicsGB kit again," Storey told BBC Sport.

"It is a pinch-me moment and is a dream I didn't know I had as a kid.

"It has been a huge motivation since the lockdown Games in Tokyo to get to Paris and to be able to have all those spectators there. It feels like a home Games again.

"For me, it is all about trying to defend my two road titles from Tokyo. I am also double world champion from Glasgow in 2023 in those two events.

"These Games will have two different courses so every time you get on the start line it is a different challenge that lies ahead and you need different skills.

"I think that is what keeps it exciting, keeps everyone guessing and keeps me working hard to see if I can pull out another great performance."

Despite Storey's remarkable success, the all-time record for most Paralympic golds remains quite out of reach, with Team USA swimmer Trischa Zorn winning 41 gold medals between 1980 and 2004.

This summer's Paralympic Games begin in Paris on Aug. 28 and end on Sept. 8.
