Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek cruise into US Open third round

NEW YORK -- Coco Gauff cruised into the third round of the US Open on Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva.

The sixth-seeded American approached the net 18 times, winning 15 of those points, in her second straight match in Arthur Ashe Stadium, and she credited that newfound net game after struggling to beat German Laura Siegemund in three sets in the first round.

"I learned to be aggressive," Gauff said in her on-court interview. "I did well making her play off her back foot."

Andreeva, at 16 the youngest women's player in the tournament, previously reached the fourth round at Wimbledon and the third round at the French Open, also losing to Gauff in Paris.

"Mirra, she's going to be a great player," said Gauff, whose own breakthrough came at age 15 when she qualified at Wimbledon and got to the fourth round. "With the more matches she has, the more experience she has."

And then Gauff closed with quite a compliment: "I really see myself in her."

Gauff's serve was clicking and her forehand was up to the task, even as Andreeva repeatedly went after that side, something Gauff has referred to as the old "playbook" against her. On lengthy groundstroke back-and-forths, mostly from the baseline, Gauff was superior.

She won 14 of 20 points that lasted nine strokes or longer, up to as many as 30 shots. Overall, Gauff compiled a 24-7 edge in winners.

"Playing a younger person just reminded me how far I have come," she said.

Gauff, 19, next faces 32nd-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium, who came back to beat American Danielle Collins 3-6, 7-6 (9), 6-1.

Elsewhere in the women's draw, top seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek rolled to a straight-sets victory over 322nd-ranked Australian Daria Saville, 6-3, 6-4, in Louis Armstrong Stadium. Swiatek has never lost in a major to a player outside the top 100.

Tenth-seeded Karolina Muchova beat Magdalena Frech of Poland 6-3, 6-3, and 15th-seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland downed British qualifier Yuriko Lily Miyazaki 6-3, 6-3.

Two-time Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka was upset in straight sets by China's Lin Zhu, 6-3, 6-3 and fourth-seeded Elena Rybakina advanced to the third round in a walkover when Australian Ajla Tomljanovic withdrew before the match with a knee injury.

American Taylor Townsend upended Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets, 7-6 (1) 7-5.

Caroline Wozniacki will take on 11th-seeded Petra Kvitova in the night session on Ashe.
