Minnesota Lynx sign veteran guard Layshia Clarendon

The Minnesota Lynx have signed veteran guard Layshia Clarendon to replace an injured Aerial Powers.

Clarendon, the WNBA's first openly transgender and nonbinary athlete, was waived by the New York Liberty on Thursday. The former All-Star started 19 of the team's 20 games in 2020, averaging a career-high 11.5 points with 3.9 assists.

Earlier Wednesday, Clarendon, who uses multiple pronouns, posted a photo of herself on an airplane to his social media accounts. They did not mention a destination.

Clarendon, 30, has career averages of 7.3 points and 3.0 assists and is also the first vice president of the WNBPA, as well as a leader on the league's social justice council.

The Lynx announced Wednesday that Powers had sustained a left hamstring strain and will be out indefinitely. She was averaging 11.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 27.4 minutes this season.
