Christyn Williams, the No. 14 overall pick in this month's WNBA draft, has suffered a season-ending knee injury that will require surgery, the Washington Mystics said Wednesday.
The team didn't specify the extent of the injury, only noting it happened in practice and that there is no timeline for her return.
"We are heartbroken for Christyn and will miss her greatly," Mystics general manager and coach Mike Thibault said in a release. "She was off to a terrific start in training camp, and I know she will work diligently to make a comeback next season.
"She will have our full support and all of our resources during her rehab. She is part of the Mystics family."
Williams, one of three players drafted out of UConn this month, was a four-year starter for the Huskies, helping lead them to three Final Fours in as many tournaments and the national title game this past season. She averaged 14.2 points (on 45.4% shooting), 3.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game as a senior.
Williams missed just four games in her injury-free collegiate career, three of which were due to a bout with COVID-19 in January.
She was the No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2018, per ESPN HoopGurlz.
The Mystics also drafted Ole Miss' Shakira Austin third overall to round out their 2022 draft class.
