Santa Clara hires Bill Carr as women's basketball coach

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Santa Clara hired former Point Loma Nazarene men's coach Bill Carr as its women's basketball coach on Friday.

Carr returns to the familiar West Coast Conference, in which he has been an assistant coach at both San Diego and San Francisco.

At NCAA Division II Point Loma Nazarene the past five seasons, Carr's Sea Lions went 81-63. The program moved from NAIA to Division II in 2012.

Point Loma Nazarene won 20 or more games in three of Carr's five seasons and made three postseason appearances. The team went 13-14 last season.

Carr, 50, played two seasons at USF from 1985 to '87.

Carr replaces JR Payne, who departed to take the Colorado job after leading Santa Clara to its first winning record since 2007-08 and first postseason berth in 10 years.
