UConn adds to recruiting class with PF Gabriel

UConn added to its recruiting class, landing a commitment from Piath Gabriel, a power forward who is ranked outside of the espnW HoopGurlz Class of 2020 top 100.

Gabriel, who plays at Bradford Christian Academy (Massachusetts), joins a recruiting class that also features consensus No. 1 prospect Paige Bueckers (5-foot-11 point guard, Minnesota), No. 21 Mir McLean (5-foot-11 wing, Maryland) and Nika Muhl (5-foot-10 guard, Croatia), who is considered one of the elite prospects in Europe.

Gabriel is among the most versatile frontcourt prospects in the Class of 2020. At 6-foot-4, she displays the ability to stretch the defense to the arc and also bring the ball up the floor at times.

Gabriel, whose family is originally from Sudan, is not the first person in her family to play Division I hoops.

Her sister, Karima Gabriel, spent her freshman season at DePaul before transferring to Boston College and later Cal State Fullerton from 2011 to '16. Her brother, Wenyen Gabriel, played at Kentucky from 2016 to '18 and is with the Sacramento Kings' G League affiliate.

Gabriel visited UConn on Monday and picked the Huskies over Tennessee, Louisville, Miami, LSU, Boston College and North Carolina, according to her high school and club coach Scott Hazelton.
