UConn recruit Jana El Alfy joins team, won't play this season

UConn women's basketball recruit Jana El Alfy has enrolled at the school for the spring semester and will join the Huskies immediately, but she is not expected to participate in the 2022-23 season, the school announced Monday.

While El Alfy cannot help the Huskies in games, she will be able to practice and travel with the team. She arrived in Storrs on Sunday.

The Huskies have recently been limited to just seven available players; Paige Bueckers, the 2020-21 national player of the year, and freshman Ice Brady were ruled out for the season before its start. Sophomore Caroline Ducharme and freshman Ayanna Patterson have been in concussion protocol most of January.

Sophomore Azzi Fudd, their top scorer this season, has played in just nine games because of a knee injury that she aggravated last week. She is expected to miss more time after being back for only two games following an initial 5½ week absence.

El Alfy -- a 6-4 forward -- is the first player from Egypt in UConn history, having represented Egypt across multiple FIBA competitions. The Huskies will also welcome in KK Arnold, Ashlynn Shade and Qadence Samuels as freshmen in the fall.
