No. 17
Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois, Jr., 6-2, 220
Preseason rank: 1
Why he's here: I know I'm going to take heat for this one, but before you rip away, hear me out. These rankings are based largely on future potential in the NFL, and despite Benn's extremely disappointing 2009 season, he projects extremely well to the next level. Scouts still like him, and I wouldn't be surprised if Benn becomes one of the Big Ten's top pro rookies next fall. That said, he had a largely forgettable junior season, recording only 38 receptions for 490 yards and two touchdowns. Illinois' new offense certainly didn't help him out much, but a player of his caliber should have done more to impact games.
I ranked Benn as the Big Ten's top player entering the 2009 season, a pick based on a very productive 2008 and the prospect of playing with veteran quarterback Juice Williams. The two even shared a national awards promotional Web site. Benn still finishes his three-year career ranked among Illinois' all-time leaders in receptions, receiving yards and all-purpose yards. He'll need to re-prove himself at the NFL level, but he's got the tools to be a very good pro.
