Injured Isaiah Thomas still gets game action at Garden

BOSTON -- How do you pass time on game days when you’re injured? If you’re Boston Celtics All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas, you play a game of "NBA 2K17" on TD Garden’s video board.

After winning a raffle at the team’s Shamrock Foundation gala in October, one young fan got the chance to battle Thomas before Boston’s game against the Toronto Raptors on Friday. Thomas selected the Dallas Mavericks while the fan, who was informed by Thomas that he couldn't pick the Golden State Warriors, selected the Los Angeles Clippers. Thomas proceeded to dominate the video-game battle.

“I killed that kid,” Thomas deadpanned. “I beat him by 22 points.”

But why didn’t Thomas play as himself and the Celtics?

“It’s not realistic,” Thomas said. “I can’t even make layups in the game. I get my shot blocked too much. So I’m not going to go with the Celtics.”

Asked if he gets frustrated with virtual Thomas’ inability to finish in traffic, Thomas added, "I finish at the rim pretty good in real life. And in the video game, every time I’m in the paint I get blocked. So until they change that I can’t be the Celtics."
