MLB Rumor Central: D-backs not shopping Nick Ahmed?

The Arizona Diamondbacks have ample depth at shortstop, but they are not shopping the slick-fielding Nick Ahmed, reports Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

Rumor Central

Chris Owings is hitting .353 in Cactus League play and is the likely Opening Day starter. Ketel Marte is another option, while prospect Ildemaro Vargas is waiting for his turn.

Rosenthal suggests the D-backs are inclined to keep Ahmed should Owings get hurt and Marte underperform.

The 27-year-old Ahmed struggled at the plate with a .218/.265/.299 slash line, but he is a superior defender with 32 defensive runs saved over the last two years.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reported last week that the Yankees, Padres and Rays had “varying degrees of interest” in Ahmed. The Yankees were mentioned as a prime suitor following an injury to Didi Gregorius, but they may fill his month-long absence with internal options such as Ronald Torreyes or Pete Kozma.
