Wisconsin on Monday approved a new compensation package for Gary Andersen that will pay the coach $300,000 more beginning in 2014.
The new deal increases Andersen's 2014 salary from $1.9 million to $2.2 million. He will receive a $100,000 raise each year of his five-year rollover contract. Wisconsin picked up Andersen's rollover earlier this year.
Athletic director Barry Alvarez in a statement said he first considered a raise for Andersen toward the end of the 2013 season, Andersen's first at the school. Andersen went 9-4 last fall with the Badgers.
The Cleveland Browns spoke with Andersen about their coaching vacancy in January, but Andersen immediately decided not to pursue the job. Alvarez in February credited Andersen for keeping him informed about the Browns situation throughout the process.
"Gary did not ask directly or even imply that his salary should be increased, but that only re-affirmed my thoughts about adjusting his compensation," Alvarez said in Monday's statement. "I've always believed that we should do what we can to keep good coaches in our department and that is why I wanted to take this proactive approach with Coach Andersen."
The raise, approved by Wisconsin's board of regents, will not be funded by tax or tuition dollars. Andersen is 39-35 in his coaching career, which includes previous stops at Utah State and Southern Utah.
