Countdown to college football: 20 days

USA TODAY Sports

20 years ago, the Florida Gators kicked off a run of unprecedented SEC dominance. Since the Gators won their first national championship in 1996, an SEC team would go on to win the national championship in 11 of the next 20 seasons. That total includes Tim Tebow-led UF adding two more titles in 2006 and 2008.

Florida won the '96 title after quarterback Danny Wuerffel won the program's second Heisman trophy. He brought home the honor under the tutelage of then-head coach Steve Spurrier, the school's first Heisman winner 30 years earlier in 1966.

Recently, Spurrier has returned to Gainesville to serve as an ambassador and consultant after retiring from coaching South Carolina.
