Sacramento State fires former Big Sky co-coach of year Jody Sears

Sacramento State fired Jody Sears on Monday, one year after he was named the Big Sky Conference's co-coach of the year.

The Hornets finished 2-8 overall and 0-7 in the Big Sky this season. Last year, Sears led them to 7-4 and 6-2 records before being rewarded with a contract extension.

The 51-year-old went 20-35 in five seasons.

"Decisions like this are never easy," athletic director Mark Orr said in a university statement. "I would like to thank Coach Sears for his dedication to the student-athletes and the program over the last five years."

Sacramento State announced a national search for a new coach is underway.
