Alabama's defensive backfield depth got another leg up courtesy of Jaylen Mbakwe's commitment Tuesday.
Mbakwe, a 6-foot, 175-pound cornerback from Pinson, Alabama, is No. 5 on the 2024 ESPN 300.
"Obviously Alabama is a championship-winning program," Mbakwe told ESPN. "I'm a winner. So that stood out to me. Academic program. The culture, the coaches, the fans, the atmosphere -- it made me feel like home. ... [Alabama defensive line] coach [Freddie] Roach and [cornerbacks] coach Travaris Robinson have been a big part of my recruitment, so that helped me make an easier decision.
"Plus it was kind of stressful going to practice and thinking about all the recruitment stuff. I was ready to get it over with and focus on my team, so we'll have another chance to go back to win the state championship."
Mbakwe is the Crimson Tide's third recruit in the 2024 cycle, joining tight end Martavious Collins (No. 145) and wide receiver Perry Thompson (No. 150).
Michigan State, Notre Dame, Auburn, Texas A&M and Tennessee were among other schools he considered, but Nick Saban's program quickly pulled away with Mbakwe, he said.
Mbakwe will be entering his junior season at Clay-Chalkville High School this fall.
He plays both ways and had over 1,000 all-purpose yards as a receiver during his sophomore season to go along with 15 pass breakups and four interceptions at corner.
"They [the Tide coaching staff] really just want me to pick [my position], but I feel like that I'm going to make my money as a DB," Mbakwe said. "So that's what I'm going to go there and play. But if they decide to use me on offense, then I'll be very glad to play offense, too."
Alabama's 2023 class is ranked ninth by ESPN and features both the second- and third-ranked cornerbacks in the class -- Tony Mitchell (No. 21) and Jahlil Hurley (No. 26).
