Texas Tech fired defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter and secondary coach Marcel Yates on Sunday after the Red Raiders finished last in the Big 12 in passing yards allowed (305.3) during the regular season.
Texas Tech defeated West Virginia 52-15 on Saturday to end the year 8-4, including 6-3 in the Big 12. But Tulsa is the only FBS team to surrender more passing yards this year.
"I appreciate the work Coach DeRuyter and Coach Yates have provided our program the past three seasons," Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said in a statement. "This was a difficult but necessary decision as we continue to elevate this program to competing annually at the highest levels of college football."
McGuire said he would name an interim defensive coordinator for the Red Raiders' bowl game later.
DeRuyter, the former head coach at Fresno State from 2012 to 2016, had been Texas Tech's defensive coordinator since 2022.
