Jaismine Lamboria earned bronze in the women's 60kg lightweight division of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, after losing to Gemma Paige Richardson of England in the semifinal by a 3-2 split decision. This is the 20-yr-old's first CWG medal, and the first earned by India's boxing contingent so far, albeit many remain in contention for the gold and bronze later.
Jaismine had the height advantage over her opponent, but Richardson did not allow her to profit from her range, closing the distance from the off and aggressively unleashing a flurry of punches. Jaismine's open, southpaw stance allowed her to get a few left hooks in, but Richardson held her own in an evenly contested first round. Richardson won the first round by a 3-2 split decision.
The English boxer started the second round aggressively once more, with Jaismine on the ropes, The Indian attempt counter-attacking but Richardson's flurry was too much - as she went on to win the round.
Richardson eschewed the opportunity to opt for a defensive final round, with her height disadvantage barely a factor. Jaismine was unable to land many of her attempted punches, with the judges eventually ruling in the English boxer's favour, by a 3-2 scoreline.
Earlier, Jaismine faced Troy Garton of New Zealand in the quarterfinal in her division, defeating her by a 4-1 split decision. Jasmine, the daughter of a security guard in Bhiwani, had an excellent first round as she overwhelmed her opponent with her fluid moves and clinical blows.
Being shorter, Garton resorted to an ultra-aggressive approach in the second round, something that took the Indian by surprise as she was cornered mostly in the ringside. "I had to bounce back in the third round and I first guarded against her before dealing in the blows," Jasmine, an Asian Championship bronze medallist in 2021, said.
