Peter Kennaugh has been forced to pull out of the Tour de France, dealing a blow to Chris Froome and Team Sky's hopes.

The British champion was a key lieutenant for the overall leader but had been suffering with illness according to his agent, the effects of which ultimately led to his withdrawal on the 16th stage.

The 26-year-old from the Isle of Man was 146th at the start of the 201km route from Bourg de Peage to Gap, almost two and a half hours behind Froome.

Kennaugh, who won London 2012 Olympic gold in the team pursuit on the track, successfully retained his British title on June 28 in Lincoln.
