Race favourite Remco Evenepoel was taken away in an ambulance after a frightening crash into a ravine during the Giro di Lombardia on Saturday.

The Deceuninck-Quick Step rider crashed on the descent from the Colma di Sormano that leads to the race finish at Lake Como.

He went over a bridge barrier during a descent but was "alive and conscious," Italian television station RAI reported.

"First update on @EvenepoelRemco," Deceuninck-Quick Step tweeted. "He is at the Como hospital, where he is conscious and his condition is being assessed by the medical team. We hope to have more news soon."

Evenepoel, 20, already has nine wins under his belt this season, more than any other rider.

He is also a teammate of Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen who was involved in an horrific crash during the Tour of Poland.
