South Africa suffered a shock 19-14 defeat to Argentina in Tuesday's Men's Rugby Sevens Olympic Games quarterfinal in Tokyo.

Argentina played the bulk of the match with six players, after experienced playmaker Gaston Revol copped a red card in the third minute.

The South American team ran in two tries to take a 14-7 lead into the second half. Selvyn Davids had dotted down first for South Africa.

Argentina then took a 19-7 lead before a final-minute penalty try kept the South African side in the contest.

Argentina, though, held on for victory despite being reduced to five players by a late yellow card.

"We had a tough match, but we demonstrated what a team is," Marcos Moneta, who scored two tries, said.

We thought of every little thing that we have left behind to be here, we are missing our families and friends, and with the pandemic it has been all the more difficult."
