RIO DE JANEIRO -- Flamengo say they have signed Peru striker Paolo Guerrero on a three-year contract.
The popular Brazilian club picked up the 31-year-old striker after he failed to get a contract extension with Corinthians, where he thrived in recent years. Corinthians are struggling financially and could not afford to pay the salaries being demanded by Guerrero.
Financial details of the deal with Flamengo were not immediately released.
The striker is one of the top players in Peru's squad that will play the Copa America next month in Chile.
Flamengo fired coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo this week after the team gained only one point in their first three Brazilian league matches.
He was replaced by Cristovao Borges, who has been without a team since being fired by Rio de Janeiro rival Fluminense earlier this year.
