Javier Hernandez, Miguel Layun head class of Mexico players in Europe

The 2015-2016 season was a memorable one for many of Mexico's players abroad. Javier Hernandez was constantly winning awards and racking up goals, Miguel Layun never seemed to stop providing assists, and Andres Guardado earned a second consecutive league title.

Before we start focusing on El Tri and the upcoming Copa America Centenario, let's take a look back at the season and grade the performances for some of the most noteworthy Mexicans in Europe:

Javier Hernandez, FW, Bayer Leverkusen: A

Hernandez hit the ground running in Germany. The striker collected 26 goals in all competitions and helped carry Bayer Leverkusen to 3rd place in the Bundesliga. There was little more that you could ask of the 27-year-old.

Marco Fabian, MF, Eintracht Frankfurt: D+

Is the blame for the lack of minutes on Fabian or on manager Niko Kovac? By the end of the Bundesliga season, it wasn't out of the ordinary to see the midfielder left off the gameday roster. Fabian will likely be disappointed with his first trip abroad.

Guillermo Ochoa, GK, Malaga: B

After months of sitting on the bench, Ochoa stepped in for the injured Carlos Kameni and became a wall for Malaga. In his 10 starts, the goalkeeper only allowed seven goals. It will be fascinating to see if he gets the starting spot for Mexico in next month's Copa America.

Jonathan dos Santos, MF, Villarreal: B

Unfortunately for Dos Santos, injury problems left the midfielder off the pitch for numerous games in 2016. That being said, the 26-year-old was still a key figure for the club that finished in a respectable spot at fourth place in La Liga.

Raul Jimenez, FW, Benfica: B+

Although Jimenez had a difficult time breaking into Benfica's starting XI, the striker was still very effective coming off the bench. He amassed 11 goals in all competitions and scored on a couple of late game-winning opportunities in April which helped clinch the league title.

Hector Herrera, MF, Porto: B+

The struggling Herrera from 2015 is long gone. He not only regained his form, but also began to regularly wear the captain's armband for Porto. The 26-year-old helped dominate the midfield and collected nine goals along the way.

Jesus Corona, FW, Porto: B-

It's tough to rate a season in which the highly talented 23-year-old was brilliant in several matches and far too quiet in others. Corona has the potential to become a world-class player and one of Mexico's greatest, but he must be able to maintain consistency.

Miguel Layun, DF, Porto: A

Layun was on fire with Porto. The defender racked up an astonishing 19 assists in all competitions and was a constant threat with his long shots. It's no surprise that rumors have emerged over a possible move for the 27-year-old to Real Madrid.

Raul Gudino, GK, Uniao Madeira: C+

Gudino could do little to save the now-relegated Uniao Madeira. The 20-year-old went on loan to the first division team and made his professional debut on Feb 19. Gudino still has plenty raw talent but needs more time to develop his shot-stopping abilities.

Carlos Vela, FW, Real Sociedad: D+

Vela was absent far too many times. With 35 games in hand, the striker collected a meager total of five goals for his club. Considering his significant role for the team, many Real Sociedad fans are likely left frustrated with the 27-year-old.

Diego Reyes, DF, Real Sociedad: B

Reyes struggled to make the starting XI during a significant portion of the season, but eventually became an important figure in the backline. The 23-year-old put in numerous noteworthy performances during the past couple of months and occasionally played as a defensive midfielder as well.

Hector Moreno, DF, PSV Eindhoven: A

The defender was a reliable source of confidence for PSV and an excellent distributor from the backline. Moreno rarely made mistakes for his team and was able to contribute with six goals in all competitions.

Andres Guardado, MF, PSV Eindhoven: A

One of the hardest working players in the Eredivisie. Guardado took charge as PSV's central midfielder and was the focal point of the starting XI. With the 29-year-old dictating and controlling nearly every game, PSV was able to clinch a second consecutive league title.

Alan Pulido, FW, Olympiakos: C+

Pulido didn't have an opportunity for regular minutes with Olympiakos until January, but was still able to impress many with his limited time. The striker had five goals and two assists in eight league games and helped his club make their way to another league title in Greece.
