Federico Higuain wants to leave Columbus Crew SC after season

Federico Higuain says he will leave Columbus Crew SC after this season.

The 32-year-old has played for the MLS club for six seasons, but he told the Columbus Dispatch that he believed it was time to move on.

"I don't know what will happen, but I think it's the finish of the cycle, you know?" Higuain said. "I'm sure the Columbus Crew will not lose too much without me -- but maybe another team in or out of the United States will win something."

Higuain said the decision to leave was his own, but Columbus coach Gregg Berhalter said he believes the door remains open to discuss a new contract.

"I don't think this is abnormal. Any player in his age profile always is concerned about their future," Berhalter told the Dispatch. "We want to discuss it, and it's something we will discuss.

"I think hopefully we'll be able to solve it sooner rather than later, but it's something where we're focused on the transfer window and winning games."

Higuain has been a designated player since he joined the club in 2012, and he is Crew SC's highest-paid player at $1.05 million in guaranteed compensation, according to the MLS Players Union.

The Argentine ranks third on the club's career scoring charts with 48 goals, and he is in the midst of a fine season with nine goals and five assists through 18 games.

He has missed the past month after spraining his knee in training, but there is a chance he could return on Saturday against San Jose.
