The New York Red Bulls have named goalkeeper Luis Robles as their captain.
Coach Jesse Marsch announced the appointment on Wednesday.
Robles is the first goalkeeper to serve as captain since Tony Meola (1997-98). He replaces Sacha Kljestan, who was traded to Orlando City FC in early January.
Robles has become the league's iron man, having started and played 90 minutes for an MLS-record 174 straight regular-season matches. Since joining the Red Bulls midway through the 2012 season, he has 49 MLS regular-season shutouts, 508 saves and an 80-51-43 record.
