Arsenal defender Calum Chambers to sign contract extension - source

Arsenal defender Calum Chambers is set to sign a contract extension, a source has told ESPN FC.

Chambers is expected to sign a deal that will keep him at the Emirates until 2022, having signed an extension until 2021 last year.

The centre-back struggled for playing time under Arsene Wenger but the new contract, confirmed by a club source, shows that Unai Emery views him as part of his plans.

Chambers, 23, joined Arsenal from Southampton in 2014 and has made 83 appearances. He spent the 2016-17 season on loan at Middlesbrough and made 12 Premier League starts for the Gunners last season.

He is one of several promising centre-backs at Emery's disposal, with Rob Holding having signed a long-term extension in May and Konstantinos Mavropanos, signed in January, impressing toward the end of the season.

Arsenal are also set to sign Borussia Dortmund's veteran centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos to add immediate cover for the injured Laurent Koscielny.

Meanwhile, sources have told ESPN FC that Gunners goalkeeper Deyan Iliev is set to sign a new deal.

Information from ESPN FC's Peter O'Rourke was used in this report.
