Beckham Inter Miami stadium gets Ft. Lauderdale OK

David Beckham's plans to build an 18,000 seat stadium in Fort Lauderdale to temporarily house his MLS expansion club Inter Miami in 2020 and 2021 were unanimously approved by the city commissioners on Tuesday night.

The city greenlighted plans to transform the old Lockhart Stadium site, meaning that Inter Miami will have a home in time for the start of its season.

No money changed hands in the deal, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, which reported that Beckham's club committed to build facilities for the community as well in exchange for the rights to use the property for 50 years. City commissioners also said on Tuesday that they will earmark some of the $200 million parks bond for improvements as well. According to the Sun-Sentinel report, neither Beckham nor his business partner, Jorge Mas, were present at the meeting on Tuesday night.

Beckham and his partners are expected to spend an estimated $60 million total on the site.
