VCU expects to have top scorer Evans in opener

Virginia Commonwealth guard Marcus Evans practiced Thursday, and coach Mike Rhoades said he expected his leading scorer to play in the Rams' first-round NCAA tournament game Friday against Central Florida.

Rhoades said the Rams would test out Evans in shootaround.

"He's not 100 percent," Rhoades said, "but he's going to give it a shot, and we'll see from there."

Evans, who leads VCU in scoring, assists and steals, suffered a bone bruise in his left knee in the first half of VCU's quarterfinal loss to Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10 tournament. He was unable to practice earlier this week.

"I'm still working each day rehabbing, but I haven't felt anything to hold me back so far," Evans said. "Everything I've been doing, obviously, it's hard to simulate a game situation until you're out there, but like I said, I've been feeling better each day, and we're all just looking forward to Friday."
