Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. left Friday night's game against the Houston Astros after being hit by a pitch in the first inning.
X-rays of the injured hand came back negative, and the Blue Jays said Guerrero has a left hand contusion. Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo said he would be day-to-day, and he was not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Astros.
Guerrero was hit on the hand by a high-moving 96 mph fastball from Houston flamethrower Gerrit Cole. He took a few minutes to gather himself but remained in the game as a baserunner before leaving an inning later.Eric Sogard replaced him at third base.
"Basically, it hit the outside of my hand," Guerrero Jr. said through a translator. "I feel very good [Saturday]. I'm going to go have some swings to go see exactly how it feels.
When it hit me, it didn't feel that bad. I thought I was OK. But then the next inning, when I went to the field, I couldn't close my glove very well, so that's when I kind of worried a little bit."
The Astros won 15-2.
In his first season with the Blue Jays, Guerrero was hitting .268 with seven home runs and 19 RBIs in 39 games entering Friday.
