Tigers trade outfielder Cameron Maybin to Cubs for minor league shortstop

The Chicago Cubs acquired outfielder Cameron Maybin from the Detroit Tigers for minor league infielder Zack Short, the team announced Monday.

Maybin, 33, hit .244 with one homer and two RBIs in just 44 plate appearances this season for Detroit. He began his career with Detroit in 2007 before he was traded to the Marlins in the deal that sent Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers. Maybin returned to Detroit in a trade and played for the Tigers in 2016.

Maybin spent last season with the New York Yankees, hitting .285 with 11 home runs and 32 RBIs in 82 games.

Maybin was brought in to give Detroit another option in an outfield that included JaCoby Jones, Christin Stewart and Victor Reyes. His deal with the Tigers included performance bonuses.

Short, a 17th-round pick in the 2016 draft, is a .241 hitter in four minor-league seasons.
