Reliever David Phelps has signed a one-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, it was announced Thursday.
The deal is for $1.75 million, and Phelps can earn another $750,000 in performance bonuses, sources told ESPN.
Phelps, 34, was 2-4 with a 6.53 ERA in 22 appearances for the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. The right-hander pitched for the Blue Jays and Cubs in 2019.
Since entering the majors in 2012, Phelps has a 34-38 mark with a 3.95 ERA and 587 strikeouts. He started his career with the Yankees in 2012 and has also pitched for the Marlins and Mariners.
To make room on the roster, outfielder Derek Fisher has been designated for assignment.
