Blue Jays designate struggling infielder Biggio, recall Horwitz

The Toronto Blue Jays designated infielder Cavan Biggio for assignment prior to Friday night's road game against the Oakland Athletics.

Biggio, 29, has struggled this season, batting just .200 with two homers and nine RBIs in 44 games.

The son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio showed promise as a rookie, when he had 16 homers, 48 RBIs and 14 steals in 100 games in 2019. He finished fifth in American League Rookie of the Year balloting.

But he has never reached double digits in homers or even had as many as 70 hits in a season since. Biggio started 34 games this season, 23 of those at second base.

Biggio has a .227 career average with 48 homers and 176 RBIs in 490 games with the Blue Jays.

Toronto recalled infielder/outfielder Spencer Horwitz from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move. Horwitz, 26, was batting .335 with four homers and 38 RBIs in 57 games at Buffalo.

Last season, Horwitz batted .256 with one homer and seven RBIs in 15 games for Toronto.
