Demian Maia to face Kamaru Usman on short notice in Santiago, Chile

Former UFC welterweight title contender Demian Maia has agreed to face Kamaru Usman on short notice in the main event of UFC Fight Night on May 19 in Santiago, Chile.

UFC officials announced the new 170-pound bout on Thursday. Usman (12-1) was originally supposed to face Santiago Ponzinibbio in the main event, but Ponzinibbio withdrew from the bout due to injury.

MMAFighting.com first reported Ponzinibbio's replacement.

A former collegiate wrestler at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Usman has posted an undefeated record of 7-0 in the UFC. His manager, Ali Abdelaziz, has referred to him as one of the most avoided fighters in UFC history.

Maia (25-8) is one of the most respected grapplers in the division, but is coming off back-to-back losses to defending champion Tyron Woodley and interim champion challenger Colby Covington.

The event, which will take place at Movistar Arena, will mark the UFC's first live event in the country of Chile.
