Sources: Overeem-Harris to headline Dec. event

A heavyweight fight between former UFC title challenger Alistair Overeem and rising prospect Walt Harris will headline UFC Fight Night on Dec. 7, sources said.

Both sides have verbally agreed to the five-round bout. UFC Fight Night is scheduled to take place inside Capital One Arena in Washington and air on ESPN.

Overeem (45-17) is considered one of the most decorated heavyweights in mixed martial arts history. In addition to challenging for the UFC championship in 2016, Overeem has held titles in Strikeforce and DREAM. He is a former K-1 kickboxing champion.

The 39-year-old is working his way back into title contention, with wins over Aleksei Oleinik and Sergei Pavlovich in his past two fights. Prior to the current streak, Overeem dropped two in a row to Curtis Blaydes and Francis Ngannou.

Harris (13-7) is riding a wave of momentum, having officially won three of his past four contests. A fourth win during this stretch, over Andrei Arlovski in December, was overturned to a no contest after Harris was found to have failed a drug test. The California State Athletic Commission ultimately found the result was caused by a contaminated supplement.

Fighting out of Alabama, Harris has an uneven UFC record of 6-4 but has gained traction as a potential title challenger with this recent run.
