Billy Preston, former 5-star recruit, to join Cavs in summer league

The Cleveland Cavaliers will add power forward Billy Preston to their summer league roster, sources told ESPN.

Preston, who is 6-foot-10, was a five-star recruit and McDonald's All-American in 2017. Known for his athleticism and scoring talent, he committed to Kansas and was once projected as high as a mid-second-round NBA draft pick by ESPN.

Preston never took the court for the Jayhawks, however, after he was involved in an on-campus car accident in November that led to an NCAA investigation into his eligibility. The NCAA never ruled on the situation, leading Preston to sign to play in Bosnia in January. He played only three games before an injury forced him to come home.

NBA scouts had a hard time gathering information on Preston because he barely played in the past year. He also declined to take part in 5-on-5 games during the league's draft combine.

These factors likely contributed to his going undrafted Thursday. Preston did have private workouts with numerous teams.

Yahoo! Sports first reported Preston's agreement with the Cavs.
