Free agent Al-Farouq Aminu has agreed to a three-year, $29 million deal with the Orlando Magic that includes a player option on the third year, league sources tell ESPN.
The Portland Trail Blazers were ahead of the curve when they signed Aminu to a four-year, $30 million contract in 2015. After the salary-cap spike the following summer, Aminu's contract quickly fell below the league average, and he became a key starter for the team.
In his four seasons in Portland, Aminu averaged 9.5 points and 7.1 rebounds while making 1.4 3-pointers per game and serving as one of the Blazers' best defenders.
This past season, he averaged 9.4 points and 7.5 rebounds in 81 starts during the regular season. He also started each of the team's playoff games en route to the Western Conference finals, although he struggled shooting the ball, connecting on just 34.9% of his attempts.
Portland had full Bird rights with Aminu and could exceed the cap to sign the unrestricted free agent, who turns 29 in September. But with the team already pressed against the tax, bringing him back could be difficult.
Aminu was the eighth overall pick in 2011, going to the Clippers. He spent a year in Los Angeles before being traded to New Orleans as part of the Chris Paul deal, then spent three seasons with the Hornets/Pelicans and another with the Mavericks before signing with the Trail Blazers.
NBA free-agent contracts can't be officially signed until July 6.
