Steelers GM Kevin Colbert signs extension

Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert signed a two-year extension Saturday that will keep him under contract with Pittsburgh at least through the 2018 NFL draft.

The Steelers announced the deal Saturday morning, hours before their veteran players were scheduled to report to training camp.

"I am happy to announce that we have extended Kevin Colbert's contract for two additional years," Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement. "Kevin's work and footprint on our football operations have been a key factor in our success. We are excited Kevin will continue to lead our personnel department for at least the next three years."

Colbert is entering his fifth season as the Steelers' general manager and his 16th season overall in Pittsburgh's front office.

The Steelers extended Colbert just two days after signing coach Mike Tomlin to a two-year extension. Tomlin's deal is worth at least $7 million per season and will make him one of the NFL's five highest-paid coaches.

Colbert, 58, joined the Steelers in 2000 as director of football operations -- a position he held for 11 years before becoming GM. Pittsburgh has won two Super Bowls and has reached the postseason nine times in Colbert's 15 seasons with the franchise.

"I am truly grateful to Art and Mr. Rooney for the opportunity to continue my career with the Pittsburgh Steelers," Colbert said in a statement. "It is with great anticipation that we enter into the 2015 season in pursuit of another Super Bowl championship."
