Redskins promote Greg Manusky to defensive coordinator

The Washington Redskins' search for their next defensive coordinator took more than two weeks. But in the end they didn't have to go far, giving the job to a familiar face in the organization: outside linebackers coach Greg Manusky.

The Redskins promoted Manusky, a source confirmed, to replace Joe Barry, who was fired Jan. 6. It has not been officially announced; NFL Network first reported the news.

The Redskins interviewed a number of candidates in addition to Manusky: Gus Bradley, Mike Pettine, Jason Tarver, Rob Ryan, John Pagano and Dennis Thurman. They had hoped to interview Carolina's Steve Wilks, but last week he was named the Panthers' new defensive coordinator. The Redskins were also interested in Houston's Romeo Crennel, should he become available. Bradley had appeared to be their top choice, but he opted for the Los Angeles Chargers' position Friday.

Manusky served as the defensive coordinator in San Francisco from 2007 to '10, when Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan held the same title with the 49ers. Manusky was San Diego's coordinator in 2011 and served in the same role for Indianapolis from 2012 to '15. Manusky played linebacker with the Redskins from 1988 to '90.

Washington's defense ranked 28th in yards per game and 18th in points allowed last season. The Redskins were 32nd on third down and 29th in the red zone. They were 26th in yards and 19th in points in 2015 under Barry.

The Redskins also fired defensive backs coach Perry Fewell and defensive line coach Robb Akey on Jan. 6. They retained inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti and hope to promote Aubrey Pleasant from assistant defensive backs coach to defensive backs coach. The Rams are also interested in hiring Pleasant.
