Terry Pegula says Sean McDermott, GM Doug Whaley on same page

PHOENIX -- Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula and coach Sean McDermott both disputed a report that there is growing friction between McDermott and general manager Doug Whaley.

"We just spent the afternoon working together, the three of us," Pegula said Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings. "Those guys get along great. They've been making some key decisions, and they work well together."

CBS Sports reported last week that the pairing of McDermott and Whaley "likely isn't built to last" and that McDermott could hire his own front-office employees in the "near future."

Asked specifically about possible additions to the personnel department, Pegula said Tuesday, "I don't know where that report came from. It's erroneous."

McDermott also dismissed the report at the AFC coaches' breakfast earlier Tuesday, saying, "Like I said at my opening press conference, I'm comfortable with the situation. That hasn't changed at all. I look forward to working together."

After firing coach Rex Ryan, the Bills put Whaley -- their general manager since 2013 -- in charge of leading the team's search for their next coach.

McDermott, who was hired in January, said Whaley would retain control of the 53-man roster. The former Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator also said he was "comfortable" with the situation in Buffalo.

On Tuesday, Pegula said the Bills' decision on whom to select at No. 10 overall in the upcoming NFL draft will be a "group effort," adding, "It's just like everything else I think most businesses do in their life. If somebody feels more strongly about something than somebody else, then maybe you lean in that direction."

Whaley was not made available to reporters at this week's meetings and will not provide a pre-draft news conference, as he has done in previous years. McDermott will address reporters about the draft next month.

"It's a lot simpler to have one spokesperson for the organization," Pegula said Tuesday. "When we sat in the coaching interviews this last go-round, we talked to all of the candidates, and one of the things we were interested in -- and Doug was in those meetings -- was we wanted a coach who could be the face of our organization and could step into that role."
