Britain's Jodie Burrage won her opening-round match at the Australian Open on Monday just two months after considering retirement from the sport, while compatriot Harriet Dart joined her in making the second round hours later.
Burrage, ranked world No. 173, nearly quit tennis after a career beset with injuries, but her perseverance paid off in Melbourne, where she earned a superb straight-sets victory over France's Leolia Jeanjean, setting up a second-round clash with former US Open champion Coco Gauff.
"It was a good decision [not to retire]," Burrage said, holding back tears.
"All of those emotions from the last nine months I think were bottled up in there," she added.
"I think because I know I have been playing some good tennis, I know what such a good opportunity today was. I knew the hard work that went in for the last year."
The Brit hit 23 winners as she stormed to a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Hours later, Dart, who only reached Round 1 as a "lucky loser," joined her in the next round as she overcame Croatia's Jana Fett in a tense match tiebreak, confirming a dramatic 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (7) win.
Dart faces Croatia's Donna Vekic in the next round.
