Minnesota Lynx to retire jersey numbers of Seimone Augustus, Rebekkah Brunson

Seimone Augustus and Rebekkah Brunson, key players on the Minnesota Lynx teams that won four WNBA titles between 2011 and 2017, will have their jersey numbers retired during the 2022 season.

The Lynx made the announcement Saturday, when Augustus returned to Target Center in Minneapolis as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Sparks. Brunson is an assistant for the Lynx.

Augustus wore No. 33 and Brunson No. 32 for the Lynx. Brunson's jersey was scheduled to be retired in 2020, but that was postponed as the league played last season in the bubble in Bradenton, Florida. The franchise previously retired Lindsay Whalen's No. 13 jersey.

Augustus was drafted No. 1 by the Lynx in 2006, when she was rookie of the year, and played for Minnesota until the 2020 season, when she left as a free agent to Los Angeles. She is Minnesota's all-time leading scorer at 5,881 points. She also leads the Lynx in regular-season games played (370), games started (365) and minutes played (10,917). Augustus finished her career last year having scored 6,005 points for a 15.4 PPG average in 15 WNBA seasons. She also averaged 3.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists, and won three Olympic gold medals with the United States.

Augustus announced shortly before this season that she was retiring as a player and would join the Sparks' staff.

"The Minnesota Lynx organization, fans and community will always have a special place in my heart," Augustus said. "I poured my soul into this city for 14 years and created incredible memories on and off the court. I'm proud to be a part of a group of women that delivered four championships and made history."

Brunson started her career with Sacramento in 2004, and won the 2005 WNBA title there. She was selected by the Lynx as the No. 2 pick in the Monarchs' dispersal draft when that franchise was dissolved after the 2009 season.

Brunson retired after the 2018 season ranked first in the WNBA in career rebounds with 3,356, but was passed by former Lynx teammate Sylvia Fowles last season. Brunson was a five-time All-Star who averaged 9.2 points in her career. In Brunson's 261 regular-season games with the Lynx, she had 56 double-doubles. She appeared in 81 playoff games, 55 with the Lynx. Her 34 WNBA Finals game appearances and 57 total postseason wins (between the two franchises) are both WNBA records.

"As a player, I was honored to play with greats like Lindsay Whalen and Seimone Augustus," Brunson said. "To be able to be a part of building the foundation on the court and setting the tone for what the Minnesota Lynx have become."
