Take Two: Most glaring omission in Big 12 top 25 player ranking

In this week's Big 12 Take Two, we debate the player with the biggest gripe getting left off our Top 25 Big 12 player ranking:

Take 1: Brandon Chatmon -- Baylor NB Travon Blanchard

Blanchard is one of the best returning defenders in the Big 12.

He should play a major role in Baylor’s defense in the fall after a breakout sophomore season that included 83 tackles (65 solo), 7.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions and one blocked punt.

The Bears defense must rebuild after losing several standouts and Big 12 co-defensive player of the year Andrew Billings but Blanchard should be ready for a starring role in the defense. A perfect fit for the nickelback position, Blanchard has good size at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds yet can hold up in coverage against Big 12 offenses. He’s extremely active with the ability to make plays all over the field.

TCU’s Denzel Johnson, Oklahoma State’s Jordan Sterns and Kansas State’s Dante Barnett landed on the list as stellar defensive backs but Blanchard can match up with any of them. With Baylor’s defense searching for stars, Blanchard should solidify a spot as one of the Big 12’s best while building upon his productive sophomore season. And few Big 12 defenders can match the versatility and production of Blanchard, which makes him the biggest omission on the top 25 list.

Take 2: Jake Trotter -- West Virginia WR Shelton Gibson

Barring injury, is there any doubt that Gibson will be on this postseason list?

I think Gibson, who is one of the most athletic wideouts in the country, could be in for a monster season. He was plagued by drops and an uneven passing attack last year. And he still finished sixth in the league in receiving with 887 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.

If his spring was any indication, Gibson is primed to jump into the top tier of Big 12 wideouts, alongside Oklahoma State's James Washington, Baylor's KD Cannon and Iowa State's Allen Lazard. Having averaged a Big 12-best 24 yards per catch last year, Gibson has immense big-play potential downfield. And he should thrive operating beside what should be another solid West Virginia rushing attack.

I would've put Gibson on my personal top 25 preseason player ranking. Either way, I think he ends up there by season's end.
